Lincoln RI Community Profile & History
Lincoln, Rhode Island was set off from Smithfield and incorporated as a Rhode Island town in 1871. Lincoln takes great pride in its illustrious history; the homes of some of Rhode Island's first settlers and the remains of small-scale industrialization have been lovingly preserved by residents and civic organizations. The earliest settlement in the town area took place about 1650. The Great Road (Rte. 123), which extends between the villages of Saylesville and Limerock, following the course of the Moshassuck River, offers within a half-mile stretch a series of structures dating from the 17th to the 19th Centuries, scarcely interrupted by contemporary development.
Manufacturing is the principal source of income today. Jewelry, silverware and primary metals are the leading manufacturing groups, but recent years have shown a trend toward increased diversification with the advent and growth of newer industries.
Lincoln is proud to host a series of recreational events for residents of all ages. The Summer Concert Series has hosted performances from the RI Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hatfield/McCoy Trio, and many others. For the children, there is the "Fairy Tales Can Come True" program.
For residents new to the area, or visitors looking for something to do, a new Bicycle Map and a Recreation and Historical Sites Map are now available at the Town Hall. The Town of Lincoln is full of recreational opportunities. Whether you're looking for great restaurants, outdoor activities, or just a place to sit and relax, Lincoln has a great deal to offer.
